You Were Never Meant to Shrink!!!

An empowering poem for teens

They told you to whisper,
When your voice was born thunder.
They asked you to fold,
When your soul was spun in wonder.
You, child of rhythm and rise,
Were never made to apologize—
For the curve of your thoughts,
Or the colors in your cries.
You walk through hallways like tightropes,
Balancing pressure, silence, and hope.
Some laugh too loud to hide their ache,
Some barely speak so they won’t break.
You may be the favorite on every list,
Or the name they always seem to miss.
Whether surrounded or standing alone,
You are still a kingdom. Still a throne.
You wear your hair in ways they question.
You speak with fire they try to lessen.
You are not too much.
You are not too different.
You are divine—
and infinitely significant.
To the teen with the busy mom or the absent dad,
To the one raised by grandma, or an aunt with what little she had—
You are not forgotten.
You are not unseen.
You are the prayer someone dared to dream.
Let them stare at your truth, if they must.
But never trade it for their trust.
The price of pretending is steep and deep—
It steals the promises your purpose keeps.
No clique, no trend, no shallow tide,
Is worth the storm you hold inside.
Fitting in is a small ambition—
When you were born for a sacred mission.
So rise—
Not just in grades or posts or fame,
But in grace, in joy, in knowing your name.
Walk like you’ve met the sky face to face,
And it told you: “Child, take your place.”
Affirmations for the Journey:
- I am not too much. I am exactly enough.
- My story matters, even if they don’t see it.
- I do not have to fit in to belong.
- Every part of me—flawed, fierce, and free—is a masterpiece.
- I honor my voice. I protect my peace. I rise.
Mirror Talk: Teen Reflection Questions That Keep You Honest With Yourself
- What parts of yourself have you ever tried to shrink just to fit in? What did it cost you to do that?
- What are three values you want to stand firm on this school year—no matter what? What would it look like to actually live those values every day?
- What is “your mission” this school year?
- Beyond the grades, the extra-curricular activities, or social groups—why are you really there?
- What’s one way you can walk taller this week—not in pride, but in purpose?
